Third Party Tax Information Requests
Requests from third parties for tax information that is considered confidential by state and/or federal law can be mailed, e-mailed or faxed to the Department of Revenue's disclosure officer.
Third party confidential information requests are received primarily from the Montana State Legislature, the legislative staff, Internal Revenue Service, other Montana state agencies, law offices and Revenue departments from other states. These types of requests include questions about taxpayer specific information, such as information from tax returns which is confidential and generally not available for public access.
The disclosure officer will review your request and work with department legal staff to determine if a subpoena for the information is necessary.
To the greatest extent feasible, all request responses will be in writing.
