SpeechesRemarks by Governor Judy Martz Check Against Delivery Thank you for coming to Helena. It is always a pleasure for me to honor Montana students who excel, and I appreciate this opportunity to present the awards to the winners of the 2002 Montana Energy Calendar Poster Contest. The energy calendar is an educational tool to help students, teachers, and all of us learn more about energy. The 2002 calendar and its artwork, created by the students here today, focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy resources. This calendar is full of tips to help us save energy. By becoming more energy efficient and eliminating waster, we can reduce the demand on our energy supplies and save money! Our student artists have based their poster art on ways that we can become more efficient in our energy use. They have come up with some very clever inventions, including a human treadmill to power a television set (see the month of January) and harnessing the tidal energy of the oceans (see month of November). Again this year, there are teachers who have also had winning students in past years, and some who have more than one winning student in this year's contest. Since posters are judged without knowing the names of the students, teachers, or schools, these Montana teachers are obviously doing an outstanding job with energy-awareness education. I see you are all lined up and ready, so let's begin. Several of this year's winners have moved out of state and are unable to join us for the ceremony today. However, I believe their teacher is here, so I hope she will come up and accept the award for these students. Thank you. In addition, some of our teachers are unable to be here because of the Teacher's Convention in Bozeman. Those teachers who are here will be joining their students in receiving these awards. To those teachers present, thank you for your hard work in energy education. The year 2002 calendar cover winner - for her poster entitled 'Waste Not - Watt Not' is Amy Barber, who was a 6th grade student at Sacajawea Middle School in Bozeman last spring at the time of the contest.
