GOVERNOR MARTZ REQUESTS MEETING WITH ALBERTSON'S TO URGE THEM TO KEEP MONTANA STORES OPENSays Albertson's 'Good Corporate Citizen' FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HELENA, MONTANA - Responding to yesterday's announcement that Albertson's plans on closing 165 stores in 25 states to improve corporate performance, Governor Judy Martz today requested a meeting with Albertson's executives to urge them to continue operating in Montana. "While it is not clear from your announcement whether any of those stores are located in Montana, I would like the opportunity to visit with you about the importance of Albertson's to the state of Montana and my sincere desire that your current operations here continue," Martz wrote in her letter to Larry Johnston, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Boise based company. Martz has made economic growth the thrust of her administration and has said that she is willing to do her part not only to create a climate where private sector businesses can create good paying jobs, but also prevent the loss of existing jobs. "I understand from my family business that you have to maximize your opportunities for your employees and shareholders, but I also know that Albertson's has been a responsible corporate citizen in Montana and we need every single job, charitable contribution and tax dollar you provide," Martz continued in her letter. "It is my sincere hope there are no planned closures in Montana." Officials in Governor Martz's office said they intend to work with Albertson's corporate headquarters in Boise to arrange a meeting or phone call between the Governor and Johnston so that the Governor can understand the company's long-term objectives and to urge them to continue their Montana operations. # # # |
