HELENA - Governor Judy Martz today issued the following statement
regarding university athletic budget deficits and the plan of action being taken by the Commissioner of Higher Education and the Board of Regents:

The trust Montanans place in their government is the foundation of this
state. Accountability in government, especially with regards to
finances for education, is a fundamental part of Montana.

In light of the recent information regarding university athletic
budgets I have spoken to the Commissioner of Higher Education and was pleased to learn that the Board of Regents is acting to ensure that this disturbing matter is dealt with swiftly and effectively. The Office of the Governor will assist in this examination in any capacity necessary.

I am a strong advocate of a comprehensive education of which extra
curricular activities play a key role. That is why it troubles me to
learn of the continuing events surrounding the budgets of those activities
that have the possibility of jeopardizing both the financial and academic
credibility of higher education in this state.

Furthermore, it is also disappointing to learn that one of the few
avenues being explored to solve this matter is increasing student fees. I do not think the students should be asked to pay for this deficit. I feel this solution would be shortsighted. That is why I stand with the
Commissioner and the Regents to complete a broad and thorough examination of the situation as soon as possible.
