Governor Martz Accepts Donation to Assist with Repair of Capitol Steps

HELENA - Governor Judy Martz today accepted an $8,000 dollar donation
from the Montana Contractors' Association Concrete Division to assist with
the repair of the Montana State Capitol steps.

"This donation will blend nicely with the state dollars I have
dedicated to this important project," Governor Martz stated. "The state capitol is the people's house. I look forward to the day when the citizens of Montana have a completely renovated capitol including the magnificent steps. I thank the Montana Contractors' Association for their efforts to help complete the capitol's renovation."

Access to the north entrance of the capitol under the steps was
discontinued on January 28 because of structural defects. Work on the project to repair the steps is scheduled to begin in May and be completed by the end of 2004.

The construction estimate is $565,000. Governor Martz appropriated
$450,000 of federal funds to help cover repair costs last November. The project will remove, re-cut, and reinstall all existing granite treads and the historic light fixtures will be restored.

A contractor for the repair project will be announced in the coming
weeks.
