The George S. Mickelson Memorial Fellowship is named in recognition of the late Governor of South Dakota, who died in a plane crash in 1993. The fellowship, formed by his colleagues, honors Mickelson's dedication to the west and commitment to public service. Governor Mickelson served as Chair of the Western Governors' Association in 1991.
"Governor Mickelson was a man who realized bigger dreams, and this award honors state workers who continue his legacy of devoted public service. State employees can receive funding for an innovative demonstration or training opportunity that would not otherwise be possible," said Governor Martz.
The award of up to $15,000 for program expenditures, travel costs, and other expenses is made possible by the Western Governors' Foundation. Past fellows have improved emergency Medical Services, attended courses in interagency drug control and worked to enhance mental illness treatment.
Governor Martz's capacity as Chair of the Western Governors Association makes Montana state workers eligible for the 2003 fellowship.
The Western Governors' Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Western Governors' Association. The foundation seeks and receives charitable grants and gifts from corporate and philanthropic donors and makes awards to the WGA and other organizations or individuals to assist in policy research.
Additional applications can be received by contacting Kris Goss in the Governor's office at 444-3862, or by e-mail, kgoss@state.mt.us.
