"As we care for our people, we must also care for our land. And the ways to address our environmental challenges need not be difficult. The health of our families, and communities; the health of our environment and our wildlife - these must come first," said Governor Martz in her address. "That is why tonight, I am announcing that I am placing the full support of my office behind removal of the Milltown Dam at Bonner. It's simply the right thing to do."
Martz made the announcement after many months of meetings with those affected by the decision, and extensive research and review, including meetings with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Arco, Northwestern Energy, and local residents impacted by the dam's removal.
"At the same time, I will continue to press Arco, Northwestern and the Environmental Protection Agency, to ensure that the needs of the local community are met," said Governor Martz.
"This is a difficult decision because of the magnitude of the issues surrounding removal of the dam," Governor Martz continued. "However, the safety and health of our families and the environment simply must come first. Removal of the dam, and the subsequent cleanup of the water and sediment in the area is simply the right thing to do for the people we serve."
Northwestern Energy currently owns the dam. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State of Montana, Arco and Northwestern have been negotiating for months regarding the removal of the dam and the costs of such a removal.
"I am pleased that the Governor has moved forward with this decision," said John Wardell with the EPA. "We will do everything in our power to ensure that the removal of the dam is timely, and the process is completed in a manner that is best for all involved."
