Taxpayers Impacted by Disasters in Midwest Can Request Waiver of Penalties, Interest
The Montana Department of Revenue will waive penalties and up to $100 of interest for certain taxpayers who have difficulty meeting the April 15 individual income tax filing and payment deadline due to recent natural disasters in the Midwest.
The Internal Revenue Service recently granted disaster-related relief to taxpayers in areas of Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky affected by storms, floods and tornadoes. Affected taxpayers have been given additional time for certain federal payment and filing deadlines without penalties and interest.
The Montana Department of Revenue believes that those affected by these natural disasters can demonstrate “reasonable cause” for a waiver of penalties and up to $100 of interest under the department’s administrative rules.
Victims of these natural disasters who also have a Montana filing requirement should do the following:
- File their tax return or report as soon as possible
- Pay any tax due (and interest, if applicable) as soon as possible
- Attach a statement requesting a waiver of penalty and interest, and detailing the specific circumstances that prevented them from filing and paying timely in Montana
Anyone who needs additional information on these waivers is asked to call the Montana Department of Revenue toll-free at (866) 859-2254 (in Helena, 444-6900).
